Unlearning

In 4th grade I can recall hours and hours of class time devoted to something called the T.A.A.S. test. This was (or is) the standardized test given to different age levels throughout the Texas public school system to grade one’s “aptitudes” up to this point.

The big deal of the T.A.A.S. test (or what I was convinced was the big deal) was the writing part of the exam. We were convinced this was such a big deal and so stressful that the teachers would make us stress relievers to squeeze and teach us yoga-like, meditating breathing techniques to use during this writing part of the exam. I was 10 years old, mind you.

To this day I can remember the Golden Rules we learned for writing on this exam.

  • Fill the pages with as many words as you can.
  • Use big fancy words.
  • Adjectives, Adjectives, Adjectives = A+

And now I’m unlearning what was required to be meditated on…

Less can be more. Big words sound fake. The right words won’t need adjectives.

What would happen if more 10-year-old fingers touched pianos prior to holding the pen?

I think the music would start to unfold in both scenarios.

EntreSpiritual Thoughts and Convictions While Looking at Outer Space

Calling all stargazers chasing sunsets.

Calling all the lonely gamblers placing petty bets.

Calling all the cold souls dreaming highschool dreams.

Calling all the young and old that have never caught anything.

Could it be that this life means more than you think?

Your dreams aren’t just dreams – but reality.

Today Matters

With the best record in the ’11-’12 NFL season, the 15-1 Packers were beat by the 9-7 Giants yesterday at Lambeau Field.

Surprised? You shouldn’t be.

Think of your products/services/ideas within the concepts taught in yesterday’s game…

  • So you have the best record thus far? So what?
  • So you’re the wild card? So what?
  • Yesterday’s trophies cant’ catch today’s passes.
  • Yesterday’s losses are not appropriate predictors of today’s outcome….neither are yesterday’s wins.
  • Guts win.
  • Home field advantage is meaningless when you don’t show up.

Our today’s do have a lot to do with our tomorrows, but our yesterday’s don’t have much say today. Frightening, but true.

Today, the whistle has blown and a new game has begun.

So what’s your record? 15-1? 9-7? All that is yesterday talk…meaningless today.

What’s important is today you are undefeated.

The old has gone and the new has come. This is the battle cry of Monday.

Godspeed.

Polish Your Lense

God, The Great Photographer, has made you lense-like.

He points you at things to unveil that which is not seen with the naked eye.

You can capture poetry in the midst of chaos.

You can grab music within a bunch of noise.

It’s your job to click and share the poetry and music.

We are anxiously awaiting the results from your aperture exposure.

Unexpected

Let’s chat about the unexpected – in the good sense of the word.

Like when I ordered the wrong dish at my favorite restaurant. They brought me what I ordered, but it was not what I had traveled 1000 miles to have. Their response? A tasting tray of the finest dishes they offered, a bottle of champagne, and the dish that I was originally hoping for – all on the house. Unexpected.

Zappos loves this concept. My wife wanted to exchange her shoes I got her for Christmas. With one call they shipped the new shoes without having the other ones sent back yet. Unexpected. 48 hours later my wife had happy feet.

Or the delivery of  just because flowers. Unexpected – and the petals always seem to convey what our words can’t.

The unexpected finds us speechless in the moment, but leads to us not being able to keep our mouths shut about the story that unfolded.

Mastery of the unexpected will build your followers quicker than anything else you can pursue.
