Angels In Marble

Michelangelo once noted about his David masterpiece saying, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

For many, our days are nothing more than a big marble block…heavy, burdensome, or simply a rock that weighs one down or must be climbed over.

I’m calling you out and asking you to find the angel in your Monday marble.

See him. What was seen as weight is now viewed as opportunity.

Listen to him. He beckons action.

Chip. Hammer. Chip. Hammer. Set him free.

May the Muse this day give us eyes to see the hidden and maybe even shy, but pleading angels in our marble blocks.

Their (angel) freedom is your fulfillment.

The Thieves of Our Nows

A text,

a tweet,

a call that can and should be called back,

a you-gotta-see-this video,

the cutest pin ever,

a bribe dressed in marketing,

a word spelling contest with friends,

gossip,

gab,

and unnoticed noise.

All starving to be a part of your now.

Conquer your nows. Give them them the air and eyes they deserve.

Now is the only time you can claim to own. A second ago vaporized – the next minute lacking in guarantee.

Now be with your client.

Now be with your family.

Now be with your Muse.

Now be aware of you in your now.

Own it – don’t be robbed.

Copy and Paste

It’s almost too easy now…

You can walk into the store purchase the mannequin’s outfit and put it on tomorrow. Stylish (today). But you’ve copied and pasted.

You can choreograph a new dance for your studio and add a taste of Gangham Style. Funny. But, again, you’ve copied and pasted.

In your pursuit of the creating the next great burger chain you can add “your” version of The Secret/1000 Island Sauce. Good. And, once more, you’ve copied and pasted.

Fulfillment in your work will be found when instead of describing it to be “like” something, you can say “this unlike anything you’ve ever seen.”

The reward is in the work, in the creative, and in revealing what The Muse has whispered that only you can decipher.

Say no to metaphorical right-clicking copying and pasting.

Empowerment

Empowerment happens when you give a way or create space for someone to experience fulfillment or joy that otherwise would not have happened without you.

This is also known as entrepreneurial responsibility.

We don’t hear this often, but your art should just as much be about taking someone on a journey or to a destination as it is an expression of yourself and your ideas.

Have you ever asked yourself?

“How many of my work days would I want to DVR?”

“Why am I here?”

“What’s my music?”

“What do I hear when I look at the clouds?”

“What do I see when I look out on the ocean?”

“What creates the space for you to pursue your passions and find inspiration?”

I was asked these questions yesterday by a mentor of mine…and the clarity on the other side of these questions was earth-shattering.

R.W. Emerson once said, “The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going.”

Before 12/31/12 ask these questions, pause, and stretch for these answers. Rest assured 2013 will welcome with you with a smile and open arms.
