A Fresh Start

Monday, for me, always holds some freshness. Actually all mornings do as well.

For most people, it appears that simply starting is the hardest part of any journey. I feel that a bit of that burden is lifted when you start from a place of newness – a place that’s fresh.

Yes, all of your steps that you have taken got you to where you are on this Monday. But the gospel of Monday is that your steps taken today will take you wherever you decide and choose them to. We can’t hear that enough can we? We decide and choose our reality.

We probably need to ask ourselves what do we want next Monday and what do we want 10 years of Mondays from now.

We can’t change the past, but 7 days from today they will refer to today as the past. And like or not, we all are holding the pen, in real-time, that’s about to write out this Monday.

The old is gone and the future is waiting for you to write it. You are the author, narrator, and protagonist.

The Most Productive Word…

is no.

That’s tough, though, when we want to, and at some point need to, say yes to email, text, people, friends, relationships, golf, twitter, and for some of you – The Kardashians. The need to be kept up with, right?

This is where noise comes in. Noise is the byproduct of giving into your wants at the inappropriate time. Noise is anything that robs your musical moments. Noise is out for itself, and ridiculously jealous of your music. Noise knows nothing of meaning or fulfillment.

Look at that…no is the first two letters of noise (just saw that….interesting).

Music, on the other hand, comes from doing what you have to do when you have to do it.

To give proper attention to the music we all long to make, we must say no to noise.

No song ever wrote itself.

No goal was ever obtained through occasional proper action.

So in a world that appears to have a million yes boxes to check off, where does one start?

Shrink.

Go small.

Have one box to check. Say no to the other 999,999 boxes.

Smaller worlds lead to bigger lives and even bigger music.

Insight gained thus far in 2013…

  • There is only one label that helps us in our dealings with people: they’re human. Any other label has too many personal opinions and experience connected to it.
  • The place all of our businesses are headed has fewer and fewer rules.
  • Everyone dreams very different dreams.
  • A great question for each day we lead is, “Would I DVR today?”.
  • In most cases, scarcity is a fallacy.
  • 1st hardest thing to do: Start something. 2nd hardest thing to do: finish what you started.
  • The pain of technology is that it fights for every one of our moments.
  • Contribution is the holiest pre-party you can ever host.
  • This all matters.

The Doors We Walk Through and The Joy Found On The Other Side Via Creating

We all walk through proverbial doors to get something or to go some place.

You had something to say. So you walked through the door to say it. Then you found the conversation, the ebb and flow of listen and response, to mean more than what you were so excited to share.

You needed caffeine. So you walked through the door to get it. All that to find that the sound and aroma of coffee brewing meant more than the caffeine fix itself.

You wanted a career. So you walked, diploma in hand, through a door to get one. Then you noticed it was the stories, both the good ones and not so good ones, that held the joy that defined a great career.

All too often we think it’s something that we can hold, touch, taste, and see that we’re after…it’s not that though.

We want experience that births fulfillment that blooms meaning.

And so we create.

We create conversation. We make a cup of coffee. We put the pen to paper and author a story.

For it is only by creating that we can cure, calm, and satisfy such wants and desires.

Alas, creating may be as cozy as one can get with joy.

Hands & Feet > Money

It’s a lot easier to put your money where you mouth is than it is to put your hands where your soul wants to go.

Money has no fear, but the guy connected to the hands tends to.

Rarely is the soft voice inside of you wrong or pushing you towards something that is not good.

It’s these deep things – those soul longings – that, truly, can only be rewarded by the action our skin and bones choose to take.

Our hands need to get better at saying “yes” to now and our feet need to run more red lights.

Vamonos.
