Now I Know My ZYX’s

My wife has created the coolest play area for our girls at our home. It screams think big, think differently, think in color, and let your music play.

On one of the walls in this room is a vintage alphabet with each letter individually framed on the wall. While spending time with one of my daughters in this room this weekend, I decided to learn the alphabet backwards.

I’ve attempted this before, but have not had any luck. Nevertheless, this time was different. I had the full picture of the alphabet in front of me.

After 10 minutes of stuttered chants and eyes locked on the wall I could do finally it without a pause or flaw.

We need the full picture don’t we?

Only then can we go from start to finish or from finish to start and never feel like a fish out of water.

All Big and Good Things…

…start very small.

This goes out to the freshmen, the beginners, and the dreamers.

Courageously dive into the small things.

Obsess over the unnoticed and then expose use to the beauty we’ve overlooked.

Draw a map and then take us on a journey.

Taste test and then shape our taste.

Every big idea, person, place, or thing is big because someone was willing to go/be/act small.

Connection: The Added Value

Every iPhone sale makes the one you own just a bit more valuable. More connection = more value.

Every new idea you read connects with the previous ideas you’ve been exposed to and makes your new thinking and insight a little more valuable. More dots connected = more value = more people accessing your dots.

Every hand you shake increases the value of your previous handshakes. (Read The Power of Who for more here). More hands connected = more value.

You can play Angry Birds or you can connect with what you’re holding or looking at right now.

Tomorrow we won’t notice your decision, but five years from today we most certainly will.

The Benefit of the Doubt

When you fundamentally give someone a new way to look at their world, their purchasing, their behavior, or their thinking, you’ve then just led them somewhere….and that’s what we all deep down want with every new connection.

We all hope to meet Christopher Columbus. And we want to go somewhere new on La Pinta.

There’s a benefit in the doubts others have about your ideas, products, and services. But you’ve got to look at it backwards to find the benefit.

When you can get your ________ to benefit them – there’s no doubt it’s going to come full circle and find a way to benefit you as well.

I’m almost certain Columbus’ words when he hit the shore of the Americas was not ‘wow’…rather, I envision him turning to his comrades and asking – “now do you believe me?”

We need to find more doubters of our music and turn them into dancers.

Bravery be with us.

The Odds

Chances are if you never try something, you will never know for yourself.

Chances are the longer you wait to do something the less likely you will take action to do it.

Chances are what you put off today will not happen tomorrow.

Chances are as experimentation increases so does one chance of succeeding at something.

Chances are the more we ask ‘what if we did this’ or ‘what if we did that’ we will lay the foundation for actually deciding the appropriate route to take and the chances of it actually working.

As our taking chances increases so do our odds.

Ask more. Swing more. Try more. Write more. Mix more. Make more.

Having done something > Intending to do so.
