Either Or

Successful people don’t live within “either or” mentalities.

You’ll never hear them say I’m either going to sleep in or get up early. They get up early.

You’ll never hear them say I’m either going to create something big or play the lottery. They create something big.

You’ll never hear them say I’m either going to make the call or disregard the call. They make the call.

If you’re not seeing success in a specific area of  your life – chances are you’ve allowed “either or” to creep in.

And, unfortunately, when we choose “or” the majority of the time it’s the path of least resistance – which never leads to success.

Don’t tempt yourself with options and a Plan B.

You were made only for plan A and not any other form of “either or.”

July 27, 2012

Today is July 27, 2012.

Your successes and your failures today are all a byproduct of action in your previous days.

Success is your responsibility.

Happenstance is a lie.

Luck is only a reality to those that are fluent in laziness.

You didn’t get here by chance.

You did this.

Own it.

Tomorrow’s success is contingent on today’s action.

Towel Throwing

You started and then what happened?

It got harder than you expected.

It looked different from the inside looking out than the outside looking in.

The other guy got a head start.

You drilled a dry hole.

You found out that skill development was greater than your natural gifting(s). That frustrated you.

You fouled out.

Someone said no.

You got hung up on.

Dealer was showing ace. You had a pair of 8’s.

You pulled a hammy.

You got writers block.

You needed sleep.

You had to work on the weekends.

And so forth…

I would estimate that 9 out of 10 people throw the towel in on 9 out of 10 things they start to do or try to create.

Why?

Simple answer – it’s easier to quit.

It’s easier to claim the dream wasn’t real.

Everyone loves the talk of getting married.

Where’s the discussion on being married?

Look at those who you call a hero and companies/churches you consider to be heroic.

Chances are they’re holding on to most of the towels that had the chance to be thrown in at some point in time.

The Doers

What do Mozart, Picasso, Magnus Carlsen, Michael Phelps, and Roger Federer all have in common?

Either by natural talent or developed skill, these guys are doers.

They romance their instruments. They take on the blank canvas. They play the game. They jump in the pool. They show up at The All England Club.

Don’t stand still. Don’t wait for the green light. Don’t ask for permission. Don’t give up.

Let the music play. Throw some paint. Deliver checkmate. Make a splash. Take the court.

Success Defined (Pinpointed)

“The border between music and noise is always culturally defined—which implies that, even within a single society, this border does not always pass through the same place; in short, there is rarely a consensus … By all accounts there is no single and intercultural universal concept defining what music might be.”  Jean-Jacques Nattiez

Making music, for purposes of this blog, is a metaphor for success. It is great news that music can’t be defined. No one, wants someone outside of them defining what success looks like for them. But it can be pinpointed.

Something inside of us is stirred when communication, instrumentation, rhythmic togetherness, originality, improvisation, passionate energy, and a message of hope connects and combines simultaneously.

Success, Letting The (your) Music Play, is that stir that I speak of.
