Please Don’t Stop The Music

There’s a rumor that some school districts are doing away with or consolidating their art and music classes at the elementary level.

I would assume this is probably to fit more standardized teaching and preparation for more standardized testing. Even though the tests the world procures for us outside of academic walls are anything but conventional.

There’s a big difference in asking “what’s the answer?” and “what do you see?”. The answer is memorized. What is seen is imagined. Art gives us that opportunity.

There’s a big difference in asking “what’s the answer?” and “what do you feel or hear?”. The answer is a formulaic. What is felt and heard taps into soul. Music gives us that opportunity to tap into such things.

Maybe school should ask more than it tells its students…the same goes for parents: children, leader: team members, etc.

Learning thy self just may be the highest form of education, and we have a problem when our children have missed the opportunity to discover their own unique and personal voice.

It never ends well when we let the music stop.

Beautiful = Right

Beauty, at its core, stands for and means that which is right. Not the kind of beauty that is graded in Miss America pageants, but the kind that unfolds in moments of awe.

The next time you hear someone say “look how beautiful” – think of them saying “look how right.” That, after all, is what they’re trying to convey when they’re lost in orchids, sunsets, mountains, or a child’s laughter, right? Such rightness makes us tremble.

So we give…we give ourself to pointing out, outlining, exposing, sharing and creating this kind of beauty. For her role is endless. She’s needed in our businesses, she’s now a must in our products, she is service, she sings in our art, she’s the one special part of our latest favorite song, she’s the purpose of poetry, and she makes our head nod up and down in our fulfillment.

When you get it right you’ve got yourself something beautiful. And when you’ve created beauty you’ve done something right.

Beauty is the universal agreement to such rightness. Put her into all things.

A Bicycle Took Us To The Moon

The Wright Brother’s story of flight is awesome, entrepreneurial,
inspiring, and heroic. We all know they tried and tried and
tried…and finally created liftoff.

But did you know they actually started out manufacturing bicycles
before they made and thought about their aircraft? That’s right. A
dream to pedal more efficiently to the local super-market created a
dream that eventually got us to the moon.

Quick thoughts:

Don’t pedal so fast you miss your dream in the clouds.

If you’re bored on your Monday bicycle then find a way to put some wings on it.

Achieved dreams lead to other dreams.

Gradually. Suddenly.

Gradually we pursue something.

Suddenly we’re asking ourselves how we got here.

Average steps gradually lead to an average life.

Scary, brave, interesting, and challenging steps gradually lead to the life we’ve always dreamed of.

Side by side and day by day it’s hard to distinguish the difference between average steps and the challenging steps. The only difference is when you suddenly see how different the places they take you are.

All things arrive to us gradually, but suddenly they’re noticed.

May we be the people that see what’s gradually happening around and in us. For this is the horizon of our hope.

Shoe-Swapping

Remember when…

  • the procedure wasn’t fully explained by the doc?
  • the meal wasn’t as good the press release promised and the owner did nothing?
  • the contract wasn’t fully explained?
  • the terms weren’t fully disclosed?
  • what you got wasn’t what you thought you were getting?
  • the message sent was not the message received.
  • someone over-promised and under-performed.
  • how it felt to not be served.
  • how it felt to be served.

Good business is metaphorical shoe-swapping. In other words, “what if I were them?” should be the questioning chorus of our moments.

If you have a Golden Rule fight song – cue the music.
