Grace

Grace is something that is hard to explain isn’t it? It’s kind of the glue, and kind of the song, and kind of the fragrance, and somehow, most likely, the plot in the story of all we see and experience.

Grace is the mysterious space between you and I and yet it is the thing in the space that connects you and I.

Grace whispers to us, grace welcomes us, and grace will only not be found when we’re preoccupied with something else ourselves. When we’re numb it can’t be felt. When we’re blind it can’t be seen.

It’s the previews of what’s to come, the show that’s in the here and now, and the word in parentheses after every name in the credits.

Quoting Thomas Merton, grace is like art in that it “enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” It was in the breeze this morning that wrapped around my skin and took me somewhere else for a moment. It was in the voicemail I wish I didn’t have to deal with today. And it was in the caffeinated, brewed algorithm I call ‘my coffee’. Its’ presence doesn’t change from the highs to the lows or from the majestic to the mundane.

And so our whimsical response is threefold: give it, share it, and enjoy it. The challenge is to not spill it or hoard it. There’s always more, but it need not be wasted or pocketed.

Yes, it’s amazing. But the bigger YES is that it’s available you, to me, and everyone with a tick-tock in their chest.

The shelf life of grace is just for the moment.

And isn’t that all we have?

And if the moment is all we have, could it be that grace is that all we need?

Fast, Faster, and Fastest.

Which one of these do you need to get to or become?

And what if these f words weren’t so much about competing, but were more focused on the speed at which you show up and become human?

What if you became fast to listen?

What if you became faster at giving the world and those in your world an A?

And what if you were known as the fastest to forgive?

The bandwidth of humanity has always been a speed that changes the end user or recipient. And it sure does appear that change just may be the moral of all our stories.

Reading By The Fire

I’m always in about 10 different books at a time. So I thought to share some the latest ones that have been interesting and fun!

Here’s a few that you may enjoy unwinding 2015 with….

Beauty: The Invisible Embrace – John O’donohue

beauty 2

I read from this book in my last podcast and have journeyed further into O’donohue’s words since then. If you’re looking for deeper and calmer presence in your days a way to increase your awareness to the depths of beauty that surrounds you, this is something you should read. But please, read it slow…sip it and then live it. If you haven’t checked out LTMP Podcast, we would love to have you join us and check out the last episode by clicking here.

Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

hamilton

I’m late to the ball on this one. Nevertheless, I learned about the Broadway Musical, Hamilton, on 60 Minutes a couple of weeks ago. Today I started to listen to the soundtrack for the musical that is unlike anything I’ve experienced in a long time. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s genius shines so bright here…Story and music, I’m all in.

Franklin BBQ: A Meat Smoking Manifesto – Aaron Franklin & Jordan Mackay

You’re now getting a glimpse into the randomness of my library. But let me say, if you’re an artist or a foodie, you’ll love this. And if you’re neither artist or foodie or from Texas, at least you’ll have a new appreciation for the religion that is Texas BBQ.

Dark Matter and Dinosaurs: The Astounding Interconnectedness of the Universe – Lisa Randall

dark

This book kept crossing my path in all kinds of ways. First, I listened to Lisa’s interview at On Being with Krista Tippett. Next, I received Maria Popova’s weekly newsletter from Brain Pickings and noticed she posted a review in this week’s in The New York Times. Congrats Maria! As always, thank you Krista! And Lisa, I’m thankful for wonderers like you!

Ok friends! I hope you get to sit still by the fire with one of these before 2016 arrives. Really, do you need anything more than history, beauty, dark matter, and barbecue?
